How to Count Words Online — and in Google Docs, Word, and More
Whether you are writing a college essay, a blog post, or a pitch, knowing your word count matters. Different contexts have different requirements — and different tools show word counts in different ways.
How to count words online
The fastest way to count words in any text is to paste it into an online word counter. Copy your text, paste it into the Word Counter, and the count appears instantly. The tool also shows character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time — all in one view.
Online word counters work for any source: Google Docs, Microsoft Word, emails, social media drafts, or any plain text. They are platform-independent and require no installation.
How to count words in Google Docs
Google Docs has a built-in word count tool. Open your document, click Tools in the menu bar, and select Word count. A dialog shows total words, characters, characters without spaces, and pages.
For a live count as you type, check the "Display word count while typing" checkbox in the Word Count dialog. A small badge appears at the bottom-left of the document that updates in real time.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows or Cmd+Shift+C on Mac.
How to count words in Microsoft Word
Microsoft Word shows word count in the status bar at the bottom of the document window. Click on it to open a detailed dialog with words, characters, paragraphs, and lines.
For a specific selection, highlight the text before checking the word count — Word updates the status bar to show "X of Y words" where X is the selected text count.
Menu path: Review tab → Word Count button → dialog with full statistics.
Word count requirements by context
Different writing contexts have different word count standards. College application essays typically have a 650-word limit on the Common App. Blog posts targeting SEO perform best at 1,500–2,500 words for informational topics. Product descriptions work well at 100–300 words. LinkedIn posts see the best engagement at 150–300 words.
For platform-specific character limits — Twitter, Instagram, SMS — use the Character Counter alongside the Word Counter to check both metrics before publishing.
Frequently asked questions
How many words is a page?
A double-spaced page in 12-point Times New Roman is approximately 250–275 words. A single-spaced page is approximately 500–550 words. Font, margins, and line spacing all affect the actual count.
How many words is a 5-minute read?
The average adult reads 200–250 words per minute. A 5-minute read is approximately 1,000–1,250 words. The Word Counter includes a reading time estimate based on 200 words per minute.
Why does Word count differently from Google Docs?
Different tools handle hyphenated words, contractions, and whitespace differently. Minor discrepancies of 1–2% between tools are normal. For submission purposes, use the word counter specified by your school or publisher.
Does the online word counter count headers and footnotes?
It counts all text you paste, including headers, footers, and footnotes. For body text only, paste just the body content without the surrounding elements.
